This paper is based on findings resulting from ASHRAE Research Project RP-1711.

Waterside economizers afford an excellent opportunity toreduce chilled-water plant energy use when air-side economizingis not viable, but they are frequently suboptimallydesigned and controlled. This paper discusses sequences ofoperation for waterside economizers developed as part ofASHRAE Research Project (RP) RP-1711, Advanced Controlsequences for HVAC SystemsPhase II: Central Plants andHydronics Systems, based on prior art and researcher experienceand provides context for the underlying best practicemechanical design assumptions underpinning thosesequences.
