Utility managers can use this article as an example of howaerobic spore monitoring can be used to demonstrate potentialfor Cryptosporidium removal at their own facilities. Theauthors discuss the Cryptosporidium removal potential in full-scaletreatment processes using full-scale aerobic spore monitoring.Other utilities can use similar aerobic spore monitoring datato evaluate the potential of their treatment processes to removeCryptosporidium, Giardia, and other microorganisms of publichealth concern.However, although raw water concentrations at participatingutilities were higher than would be found at most places in theUnited States, the participating utilities could have benefited byusing lower detection limits for filtered water samples. Other USutilities with lower raw water spore concentrations may havefacilities capable of achieving 3.0-log or greater removal of sporesand Cryptosporidium, but these facilities may not be able to mathematicallydemonstrate this capability unless they develop methodsto achieve lower detection limits in filtered water samples.
