Efforts by utility managers, especially of some small watersystems, to comply with the US Environmental ProtectionAgency's (USEPA's) new Ground Water Rule may sooninclude the addition of chlorine to their systems for disinfection.However, depending on water quality characteristics and the typeof pipe metal, the addition of chlorine may increase internalcorrosion of the distribution system. This, in turn, may push asystem out of compliance with USEPA's 1991 Lead and CopperRule for system corrosion.If corrosion does increase, pH adjustment or the addition oforthophosphate as a corrosion inhibitor, can help control theproblem. No matter the situation, the authors stress the need forroutine monitoring of the system so that chemical levels can beadjusted appropriately in the event of corrosion.
