In October 2001, the US EnvironmentalProtection Agency decided to moveforward with implementation of a 10-ug/L standard for arsenic (As) indrinking water. Given this more stringentAs standard, water facilities, especiallysmaller treatment systems, need up-to-dateinformation on the ability of existing treatmenttechnologies to remove As fromdrinking water. A yearlong study was conductedat two ion-exchange (IX) and twoactivated alumina (AA) water treatmentplants in New England to evaluate the performanceof these full-scale systems forconsistently removing As from raw water.The source water contained 34-87 ug/L oftotal As, consisting primarily of As(V),except for one system in which 0.3-28.8ug/L of As(III) was measured.
