Description / Abstract:
This method of measuring the tensile strength of a fiber at specified
constant rates of loading is designed for determining the dynamic
fatigue parameters of optical fiber. Since this method is 100%
destructive, it shall not be a substitute for any proof testing.
This method is intended to estimate the dynamic fatigue parameter of
individual optical fiber lengths. It shall not be used for cable or
fiber bundles. The use of these parameters for reliability estimates is
still under study. A method for extrapolating the dynamic fatigue
parameters to service environments different from the default
environment specified in this FOTP (23 degrees C and 50% RH) has not
been developed.
This method is intended to be used only for those optical fibers for
which the median strength is greater than 3100 MPa (450 kpsi) at
25%/minute strain rate.
This method is intended to test fatigue behavior of fibers by varying
the strain rate. The test is applicable to fibers and strain rates for
which the log of fracture stress versus the log of strain behavior is
linear.
